Pete Buttigieg has an an extensive resume. He’s the former mayor of South Bend,  Indiana, a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate and the current U.S. Secretary of Transportation, but the politician said parenthood is the most “demanding” job of them all. 

The new father opened up about the joys and challenges of parenthood during an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe Thursday He welcomed twins Penelope Rose and Joseph August Buttigieg via surrogate with husband Chasten in August.

“It’s been wonderful. Buttigieg, who is 39 years old, stated that the experience was everything you would expect. I think what has surprised me the most is how joyous there can be even in difficult parts.

He added, “Don’t get me wrong — it’s the most demanding thing I think I’ve ever done, that Chasten and I have ever taken on, but it’s just amazing.”

Before becoming a father, Buttigieg said he “used to think of 5 a.m. as early.”

Buttigieg explained, “Now I see it as naptime if I am lucky.” “And yet, I catch myself grinning half the time… We’re just over the moon.”

Buttigieg was married to Chasten on June 18, 2018. In 2020, Buttigieg revealed during a visit to “The Carlos Watson Show” that the couple wanted children and are “taking steps in that direction. I’m excited and a little scared… it’s an enormous responsibility.”

“I would like to believe I’d be the cool father.” Buttigieg joked that the reverse could be true.

The couple first announced their new roles as dads in August.

Buttigieg said, “Chasten and I wanted to have a family for a long time.” Tweet at the time. “We’re overjoyed to share that we’ve become parents! The process isn’t done yet and we’re thankful for the love, support, and respect for our privacy that has been offered to us. We can’t wait to share more soon.”

Buttigieg and their twins were revealed in September. She shared an Instagram photo with a cute picture of her new foursome. 

“Chasten and I are beyond thankful for all the kind wishes since first sharing the news that we’re becoming parents,” the U.S. secretary of transportation posted Saturday on Twitter. We’re thrilled to add Penelope Rose And Joseph August Buttigieg as our new family members.
