Another school shooting has decimated a community in Michigan. A 15-year old sophomore opened fire Tuesday morning, killing 3 students and injuring 7 others. This is the latest incident in an “epidemic”, where gun violence has overtaken the United States. There have been 28 school shootings by 2021.
The coronavirus pandemic – which kept schools shuttered for much 2020 and into 2021 – may have interrupted the trend of school shootings over the last decade. Experts also stated that the overall rate of gun violence has increased in the wake of the pandemic and had a greater impact on children than before.
The deadly shooting at Oxford High School in Oxford Township, a suburb about 35 miles north of Detroit, marks the 651st incident this year in which at least four people were shot, whether fatally or not, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which tracks mass shootings.
In 2021, how many school shootings were there?
Education Week tracks school shootings in schools where there have been firearm-related deaths or injuries. There were 28 of them this year.
Twenty of those occurred since August, when students returned to learning in person for the first-time since the outbreak. Ten shootings were recorded in 2020.
That dropoff should not be interpreted to mean that schools were “safer,'” Education Week noted: “Rather, the definition of school safety has shifted as schooling entered the home in a way it never had before.”

What number of people were killed in school shootings last year?
Education Week reports that at least 9 people were killed by school shootings this year. Eight of these victims included children. Another 46 have also been hurt.
Arizona’s 16-year-old boy was also taken into custody that day for allegedly attacking and injuring his classmate on Monday in high school. According to police, the shooting occurred during the sale of a “ghost gun.”
According to Education Week’s tracker, the most recent school shooting death was Tuesday, in September when a North Carolina student died from his injuries after being shot at school.
Which schools have experienced school shootings since 2021
School shootings have occurred in 19 states in 2021 – with the highest number (four) taking place in Texas, according to the tracker. Tuesday’s incident is the most documented of the year.
There have been school shooting deaths also in North Carolina, Pennsylvania and New Mexico.
