What started as a text to a wrong number has led to years of friendship and shared Thanksgiving meals for Jamal Hinton and Wanda Dench, a holiday tradition born from a happy mistake that’s gone viral every year since.

In 2016, Dench sent a text to a number she believed belonged to her grandson to invite him to Thanksgiving dinner at her home in Mesa, Arizona. She accidentally sent Hinton a text, which was completely unexpected at that time. 

Hinton asked who the number was and when Dench sent a photo of herself to him, he replied, “You not my grandma. Do you still have a plate?

“Of course. Dench said, “Of course.

Hinton was invited to the family holiday every year since Dench sent Hinton a text message.

After he posted their text interaction on Twitter in 2016, the heartwarming story went viral, and on Sunday, he confirmed via social media that the duo spent sharing Thanksgiving together again.

Dench said that Dench was willing to maintain the relationship with him. He spoke out about it in the Arizona Republic. The Arizona Republic is part of USA TODAY Network. Dench said, “We are more like extended family, and best of all, we’re friends.”
