Gavan O’Herlihy, who played the role of Chuck Cunningham in the early episodes of  “Happy Days” has died, according to his rep. He was 70. 

USA TODAY’s Michael Emptage stated that O’Herlihy had died in Bath, England on Sept. 15, 2015.There was no cause of death. Emptage described O’Herlihy’s career as a “wonderful actor” with distinguished careers in theatre, TV and film. 

“Gavan was larger than life and is greatly missed by all who knew him, most particularly by his adoring wife and family,” Emptage said in the statement. 

O’Herlihy, a native of Ireland, had a long and successful career on screen for almost 40 years. Before he appeared on ABC’s 1970s sitcom “Happy Days,” he made a cameo on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” 

O’Herlihy’s Cunningham appeared on “Happy Days” for nine episodes during the first season in 1974, according to IMDb. He was replaced by Randolph Roberts for two more episodes that aired the same year.

O’Herlihy made appearances in multiple TV series, including “Rich Man, Poor Man,” “The Bionic Woman” and “The Amazing Spider-Man,” throughout the 1970s. O’Herlihy also starred in recurring roles on London’s ITV channel’s “We’ll Meet Again.”

His first movie role was in 1980, as “Willow,” which he co-starred with Val Kilmer. In the 1980’s, he also assisted in “Willow”, a James Bond movie that starred Sean Connery. 

Dana Delany (China Beach) remembered O’Herlihy’s appearance in the series.

“Very sorry to hear of Gavan O’Herlihy’s death. In one of the most bizarre China Beach episodes we have, Juice, he was my Everglades love. On Twitter, she posted. 

Star of “Happy Days” Ron Howard wrote: “RIP Gavan. I knew him as the 1st of 2 Chucks on #HappyDays & then as Airk in #Willow where I had the pleasure of directing him. He is a talented actor and has a great spirit.
